Launched initially as an online publication, the newspaper was founded in
2000 as a platform to deliver Christian news across denominational lines and as a way to bring together the Christian community through a common news source. It moved its headquarters from
San Francisco, California to
Washington, D.C. in

The newspaper's Honorary Chairman is Ralph D. Winter, founder of the U.S. Center for World Mission. Its chairman is currently William L. Wagner, a former second vice president of the
